直訳すると藁の塊の中の一本の針を探す、ってことなんですが、

それを見つけるのは無茶苦茶難しい、という時にこういう表現をするようです。

例えば、「The little fires everywhere」の中では、中国に行ってしまった人を探すことを考えている時にこう表現されていました。
